Detroits Notorious Purple Gang free essay sample

Abstract When Prohibition began in Michigan on May 1, 1918, the young Purple Gang escalated from crimes of vandalism, petty thievery, and pick pocketing on Detroit’s lower east-side Paradise Valley located within the Hastings Street neighborhood to armed robbery, extortion, bootlegging, hijacking liquor, and even murder. They were used as terrorists by corrupt labor leaders to hold union members in check. The Purple Gang was led by four brothers. Abraham (Abe), Joseph (Joey), Raymond (Ray), and Isadore (Izzy) Bernstein were ruthless, but prospered and soon branched out into strong arming, gambling, and narcotics. The Purple Gang remained in power in Detroit’s underworld from about 1927 to 1935. They controlled the wire service to all Detroit bookies and eventually became the illegal liquor supplier to Al Capone’s Chicago mob. The Purple’s reign ended when most of the members were either killed off or arrested to serve long prison terms. Detroit’s Notorious Purple Gang â€Å"Prohibition is an awful flop. We like it. It can’t stop what it’s meant to stop. We like it. It’s left a trail of graft and slime, it won’t prohibit worth a dime, it’s filled our land with vice and crime. Never the less, we’re for it† (Adams, F. 1931). Prohibition by definition is an act of prohibiting. In Michigan, the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol were prohibited on May 1, 1918, over a year sooner than the rest of the country. Enter the young Purple Gang, a gang of Jewish juveniles disrupting Detroit’s lower east-side neighborhoods. These juveniles quickly learned to profit from the nation going dry by hijacking and strong arming bootleggers and rum runners. The Purple Gang was notorious for being ruthless, vicious, feared, and was used by other gangs as gunners and protectors. The Purple gang was led by the four Bernstein brothers, Abe, Joey, Ray, and Izzy. The brothers were juvenile delinquents that went to school at the Bishop Ungraded School on Winder Street with other child ruffians, Harry and Lou Fleisher, Sam Davis, and Philip and Harry Kewell. The youngsters robbed local merchants, victimized street peddlers, and rolled drunks for easy pocket change (Kavieff, P. 2008, p. 9). The Purple’s were mentored by Charles Leiter and Henry Shorr, who ran a corn sugar business located on Oakland Ave. named the Oakland Sugar House. The Oakland Sugar House was a legitimate business, providing corn sugar for home brewers still allowed to make a set amount of liquor for personal use. The Sugar House became a valuable resource to illegal stills and alley breweries and was run by mobsters. They used the Purple gang to strong arm and extort businesses (Gribben, M. n. d. par. 10). There are different theories on how the gang received its colorful name. Rumor has it that the gang inherited the name as a result of a conversation between two shopkeepers terrorized by the juveniles. The shop keepers claimed the boys were â€Å"tainted, off color, rotten, purple, like the color of bad meat† (Gribben, M. par. 7). Another theory is that Purple Gang member Eddie Fletcher, a featherweight boxer, always wore purple boxing shorts during matches. Yet, another story is that Sammy Cohen, A. K. A. Sammy Purple, was an originator of the Purple Gang (Jones, L. 2008, par. 4). In all likelihood, the name was invented by a local journalist. However the name came about, that’s what they got tagged with and it stuck with them until the end. When the Prohibition took effect in Detroit, in May 1918, the Volstead Act closed down Detroit’s 1500 saloons, but by 1925 there were over 15000 speakeasies or â€Å"blind pigs† as they were called, and many of them came under the control of the Purples. The Purple’s, merging with the Oakland Sugar House Gang, had control of the illegal liquor distribution and sales. They preferred hijacking to rum running. With the Detroit River less than a mile across in some places, and 28 miles long with thousands of hiding places, it was a smuggler’s dream. Although Ontario had banned the sale of liquor, their government approved and licensed distilleries and breweries to manufacture, distribute, and export it. These waterways carried 75 percent of the liquor supplied to the United States during Prohibition. From Detroit, liquor was shipped to Chicago (where Al Capone sold it under his â€Å"Log Cabin† logo), St. Louis, and points west (Gribben, M. par. 15). Illegal liquor sales were the second biggest business in Detroit next to the auto industry, netting around $215 million a year. Walkervilletimes. n. d. par. 26). By the mid-1920’s, the Purple gang divided it’s time working for Leiter and Shorr and hiring themselves out as guards for wealthy Detroit gamblers. In 1925, Abe and Francis X. Martel, the corrupt president of the Detroit branch of the American Federation of Labor, partnered up to regulate the cleaning and dying industry . They, together with Sam Polakoff, president of the Union of Dyers and Cleaners, fo rmed a racketeer controlled Cleaners and Dyers Association. All cleaners and dyers in the city were expected to join the association and if they refused, members of the Purple Gang would be sent out to obliterate cleaning plants, destroy truckloads of laundry, and lambaste and terrorize drivers. At least two union agents were murdered (Kavieff, P. p. 29). The nationally dubbed â€Å"Cleaners and Dyers War† stormed the Detroit area from 1925 to 1928 only ending when local cleaners filed a complaint with the Wayne County prosecutor resulting in the trial of 13 gang members on extortion charges. Every one of the Purple Gang members was acquitted in September, 1928. The gang’s reputation quickly soared into invincibility. In 1926, a local distributor named Johnny Reid was murdered for unknown reasons, sparking retaliation. Abe Axler and Eddie Fletcher, who had joined the gang from New York and had a reputation as brutal gang enforcers, rented an apartment in The Milaflores Apartment Building at 106 East Alexandrine Avenue and was set up to be a meeting place between the Purple’s, and Reid’s murderer, Frank Wright. Wright and two cohorts, Reuben Cohen and Joe Bloom, came to Detroit from a St. Louis mob and began muscling in on the Purple Gang’s local interests. On March 27, 1927, the three St. Louis men were gunned down in the Milaflores apartment by hired freelance gunman Fred â€Å"Killer† Burke, who opened fire with a Thompson submachine gun. The Milaflores Massacre is rumored to be the first time a Tommy gun was used in any murder in Detroit. Burke, would eventually become a suspect in the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. This event, coupled with the extortion acquittal, gave the Purple gang the honor of being known as untouchable. Among corrupt police officers of the Prohibition Era was Vivian Welch. Welch, along with his partner, Max Whisman, was extorting money from the Purple Gang supplied blind pigs. Welch lost his job on the police force but Welch continued to shakedown pig operators. In January, 1928, Vivian Welch was taken for a ride by Purple members and murdered being shot nine times in a Chevrolet coupe belonging to Ray Bernstein. No one was ever charged or convicted of the crime (Kavieff, P. p. 42). The hijacking of the Purple’s shipment of Capone’s Old Log Cabin Whiskey in 1929 led Abe Bernstein to set up a hit on the Chicago’s Moran gang by telephoning George â€Å"Bugs† Moran the day before the killing, and arranging to deliver a shipment of liquor into the garage that day, hoping Moran would be there himself, to accept the delivery. Some sources claim that Police records confirmed that four members of the Purples, the Fleisher and Keywell brothers stayed at a boarding house at 2119 Clarke Street, Chicago, directly across from the garage where the killings took place, before, during and after the shooting (Jones, L. ar. 39). On February 14, 1929, the garage occupied by the Bugs Moran gang was ambushed and 7 people were murdered. This day is unofficially known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Philip Keywell and Morris Raider were the first Purple Gang members to be convicted of murder, stemming from the July 1930 slaying of 15 year old Ar thur Mixom, an unarmed ice peddler who unknowingly peeked in on a Purple liquor cutting plant. This is a plant where liquor is watered down and stretched to provide more liquor for a better profit (Gribben, M. ). During Detroit Mayor Charles Bowles election, radio host Jerry Buckley advocated for an electoral recall. Bowles was for the prohibition and the Purple’s wanted him to stay in office. At 1:40am on July 23, 1930, in the lobby of the La Salle Hotel in Detroit, three men came in and shot Buckley. No one was ever charged with the murder (Time. com. 1931). A partner in the bookmaking operation, Solly Levine, was a go between for rivals Purple’s and three men that were brought to Detroit by the Oakland Sugar House Gang as rod men to protect the mobs alcohol supply. The three men, Hymie Paul, Joe Lebowitz, and Joe Sutker decided they were not nterested in being someone else’s strong men. They decided to branch out on their own. The trio disregarded the strict code of Detroit’s underworld. They hijacked friends and enemies, and double crossed business partners. They refused to stay within their boundaries and stepped on the toes of other gangs. The men were warned numerous times to cool it, to no avail. They had served the gang well as enforcers but had to be eliminated. A peace meeting was set up on September 16, 1931 in apartment 211 at 1740 Collingwood Avenue, a few blocks from the Gang’s home base on Oakland Avenue. Ray Bernstein got Levine, who originally brought Sutker, Lebovitz and Paul into the gang, to bring the three men to the apartment. There was a big business convention going on in Detroit, and the meeting was seemingly called to discuss liquor supplies. Ray got the guys comfortable. They lit up cigars and were puffing away merrily when three of the Purple’s present, blew them into eternity. The shooters were Irving Milburn, Harry Fleischer known to the gang as H. F. and young, eighteen year old Harry Keywell. They made sure they missed out on Levine, who made his own way from the apartment at a rapid pace. Levine later testified on the Collingwood Manor Massacre in place of immunity and ultimately the shooters, along with Ray Bernstein, were convicted of the murders (Jones, L,). Solly Levine was put on a boat to France by the police. However, once arriving, French officials were unwelcoming and sent him back. He tried to go to Ireland but could not get a passport. Solly Levine was never heard from again (J-Grit. com. n. d. ). Because of the Purple Gang’s notoriety of kidnapping for ransom, they were quickly suspected in the March 1, 1932 kidnapping of American aviator Charles Lindbergh’s baby, Charles Jr. n order to extort their biggest customer, Al Capone. It was quickly discovered that the Lindbergh’s nurse, Betty Gow, was related to a Purple named Scotty Gow, but the FBI could find no direct evidence of the gang’s involvement (Bammer, S. 2011 par. 11) Detroit’s Public Enemies Number One and Two, Abe Axler and Eddie Fletcher were known as the  "Siamese Twins† of the Detroit underworld because they were inseparable (Kavieff, P. p. 32). The duo was misappropriating Purple money that was to be used to buy a brewery after the repeal of the prohibition. Axler and Fletcher were found by an Oakland County constable urdered in the back seat of Axler’s new Chrysler in the early morning of November 26, 1933. They had been shot multiple times in the face and were laying side by side, holding hands. On December 5, 1933, the 18th Amendment (Prohibition) was repealed. The black market liquor sales were drying up and senior Purple members were serving lengthy prison sentences. Rumor has it that in 1935, the Bernstein brothers were called to a meeting with the Italian Detroit Mafia and were told that the mob would be taking over the now defunct Purple’s rackets. Abe, realizing the core of his Purple Gang was gone, relinquished. He was essentially taken care of by the mob and was often utilized as an advisor. Smaller, individual groups of Purple gangsters continued to operate. Former Purple Gang Enforcer Harry Millman led a crew of Jewish mobsters who shook down mafia controlled handbooks and brothels. Millman’s hatred for the Italian’s was well known and he was advised and warned multiple times by Bernstein to quit making trouble for the mob but blatantly continued to be destructive. His hatred for the mob and the fact that Bernstein no longer wished to protect him, caused his demise. On November 25, 1937, after several attempts on Millman’s life, he was gunned down while standing at the bar at Boesky’s Restaurant in Detroit (Kavieff, P. p. 97) The Purples governed Detroit’s underworld for a brief time but left lasting impressions in the memories lawmen and the people whose paths had crossed theirs. The memory they evoked, would be rekindled in 1960, with the release of a movie about them, called, not surprisingly, The Purple Gang. It starred Barry Sullivan, and Robert Blake, who hit the news in connection with the mysterious killing of his wife, Bonny, in 2001. A reference to the gang turned up in one of Ian Flemings Bond novels. Helmut M. Springer, noted as a member of The Purple Gang of Detroit, is a character in Goldfinger, hired to help with the Fort Knox robbery (Jones, L. par. 88). They even found immortality in of all places, a 1957 rock Elvis Presley’s â€Å"Jailhouse Rock† singing, The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang. The whole rhythm section was the purple gang. † The infamous Purple Gang started as juvenile riff raff, targeting locals and terrorizing the neighborhood. With the Prohibition, they swiftly moved up to more serious, severe crimes and control. Their finalization in the underworld came quickly with the end of the Prohibition. Bundling Campaign Contributions - How It Works Bundling campaign  contributions is a common practice in American congressional and presidential elections. The term bundling refers to a form of fundraising in which one person or small groups of people - they might be lobbyists, business owners, special interest groups or activists seeking legislative action  - convince  their wealthy friends, coworkers and other like-minded donors to simultaneously write checks to their preferred candidate for public office. It is not uncommon for bundlers to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in a presidential-election year and receive special treatment in return for their work. A bundler is the person or small group of people  who pool or aggregates these contributions and then delivers them in one lump sum to a political campaign. In the 2000 presidential campaign, Republican nominee  George W. Bush used the term pioneers to describe bundlers who raised at least $100,000 for his White House bid. Bundlers are often rewarded by successful candidates with plum positions in an administration or other political favors.  Four out of five of Democratic presidential nominee  Barack Obamas largest fundraisers in the 2008 presidential campaign received  key posts in his administration, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Responsive Politics. Bundling is a legal way for campaign supporters to circumvent  individual contribution limits set forth in federal campaign finance laws.  An individual can contribute up to $2,700 to a candidate for federal office in a single election cycle, or up to $5,400 a year. But bundlers can persuade like-minded donors to give at once, typically by inviting them to a fundraiser or special event and in turn rolling up those contributions into massive sums of money to federal candidates. Bundling Is Not Heavily Regulated The Federal Election Commission, the entity that regulates campaign-finance laws in the U.S.,  requires candidates for federal office  disclose the funds bundled by registered lobbyists. For everyone whos not a lobbyists? Disclosure is voluntary and sporadic. In the 2008 presidential election, for example, Obama and Republican nominee John McCain both agreed to make public the names of bundlers who raised more than $50,000. The FEC rules, however, are considered loose by government watchdogs and  easily circumvented by crafty bundlers and lobbyists wishing to remain out of the public eye. In some cases, bundlers are able to avoid disclosing their role in raising large sums of money for a campaign by never physically pooling and delivering the checks, just organizing the fundraising.   How Much Money Do Bundlers Raise? Bundlers are responsible for generating tens of millions of dollars to their preferred candidates. In the 2012 presidential race, for example, bundlers delivered about $200 million to Obamas campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Bundlers, who are often corporate CEOs, lobbyists, hedge fund managers or independently wealthy people, are able to funnel far more money to campaigns than they could personally give under campaign finance laws, states the good-government group Public Citizen.   Why Bundlers Bundle Bundlers who deliver large amounts of campaign cash to candidates have been rewarded with access to prominent White House advisers and strategists, official titles and privileged treatment in campaigns, and ambassadorships and other plum political appointments. The Center for Public Integrity reported that Obama rewarded about 200 bundlers with jobs and appointments. Bundlers play an enormous role in determining the success of political campaigns and are apt to receive preferential treatment if their candidate wins, Public Citizen wrote. Bundlers who direct money to presidential candidates tend to be first in line for plum ambassador positions and other political appointments. Industry titans and lobbyists are more likely to receive preferential treatment from elected officials if they raised large amounts of money for them. When Is Bundling Illegal? Bundlers seeking political favors often promise big money to candidates. And sometimes they fail to deliver. So in some cases, bundlers have been known to give large sums of money to employees, family members and friends with the implicit goal of having those employees, family members and friends turn around and contribute to a candidate for Congress or the presidency. The Beginnings of the Sectional Crisis During the antebellum period, the North and the South were complete opposites. This led to each side viewing itself as superior and viewing the other as "backward." Each side believed itself to be superior, in all aspects, to the other. The reasons for these opinions can be found in the different economic, social, and cultural systems found in these two regions. The Southern economy was primarily agricultural. This economy, like many other agricultural economies, did not allow for a great deal of social mobility. The South also lacked factories, or much industry. However, this was not the main difference between the North and the South. Most troubling to Northerners was that the South used slaves as its main source of labor. Obviously, Northerners would be appalled by the barbarism associated with slavery, the beatings, the separation of families; but they were not. Most appalling to Northerners was that slavery did not encourage social mobility, education, or industrial expansion in a society. This was in direct conflict with northern views. The North had always been an industrious society. Ever since the Transportation Revolution of the early 19th century, the North progressed while the South stagnated. The North produced steel and iron while the South's mainly produced cotton. This is not to say that the South was not an economically prosperous region, but it was just not built "in the North's image of industrious." The South did not seem to have a problem with the system of slavery. After all, why should they? it had been successful for over 200 years. Instead, they saw the North as a cruel society full of the treacheries caused by capitalism. They saw factory work as "wage slavery" while they viewed Southern slavery as "paternalistic" and "benevolent." Slavery, they contended, helped eliminate all class distinctions in Southern society. In the North, they saw, factory owners became rich while their employees lived in a state of poverty. Slavery was the great unifier of Southern society. Poor Southerners also supported the "peculiar institution", because it ensured that even the poorest white man was higher than a black man was. This was why Southerners said it preserved social order. Slavery, essentially, gave poor whites someone to look down upon and mock. To an agrarian society the preservation of a rigid class system is of primary concern, unfortunately, this was the only way the South could preserve it was through slavery.

When was the last time you praised someone? † – These are the questions posed at the beginning of the film which made me contemplate on myself for a while and somehow gave me a glimpse of what the movie is all about.The film is narrated and seen through the eyes of the eight year old Jerry Yeo; presenting the lives, struggles and adventures of him and his brother Tom Yeo and their friend Chengcai Lim. Jerry enjoys performing arts, while Tom excels in technological aspects and a talented writer and blogger. They come from a well heeled family with busy parents. On the other hand, Chengcai is physically active and an adept fight er. Unlike his friends, he comes from a working class background and was raised by his widowed ex-convict father.The story started with Tom, receiving a trophy for being a champion blogger. But instead of being proud of his son, Mrs. Yeo confronted him, saying that writing nonsense is not awesome. As Jerry narrated, â€Å"Grown-ups think that, by telling us a lot, they are communicating. Actually, they are running their own shows. † – their parents keep on blubbering too much and don’t care about their children’s feelings as long as they are able to say their pieces. At school, Jerry was chosen as the lead narrator for their school play and encouraged by his teacher to get his parents to attend.But he falters because he knows that his parents are very busy and view performances as just a waste of money and time. Aside from this, he got bullied by his classmates who made her kiss a girl and fallaciously made him believe that he might impregnate her as what they’ve seen from the television. This made him anxious and tried to ask from adults around him on how do babies come about but none of them bother and open enough to tell him the truth. Confuse of what to do, he bought pineapples for her based from what he heard that eating this will cause miscarriage.As a result, the girl was brought in the school clinic and their parents were then called. Because of this, Jerry’s parents had an argument which then resulted to what he termed as â€Å"cold war. † On Father’s day, Tom gave Mr. Yeo a razor, while Jerry gave him a drawing illustrating how he views his father absence because of being too busy with his work. Both gifts were not appreciated. During dinner, Tom’s cell phone rang and his parents reprimanded him when he got the call. But after several minutes, their cell phones rang and left the table to answer it, leaving their children eating on their own. And when Mr.Yeo lose his important files in his laptop which he will use for a business presentation at work, Tom managed to fix it before going to school. He then delivered it to his father hoping that he’ll be praised because of what he did. But instead of thanking him, Mr. Yeo scolded him for touching his things and not being in school. Mr. Lim on the other hand, loves Chengcai very much and doesn’t want him to end up loser like him who once thought of being a good fighter but broke his leg that’s why he don’t want his son to develop his fighting skills. He has gone to great lengths to ensure that his son will turn to be good and responsible.Alas, he doesn’t communicate well with his son and disciplined him by using physical violence and throwing verbal abuses at him. After their previous fight, he accidentally tore Chengcai’s bag when he tried to pull it. So, keeping in mind of his friend’s advice about how he should show his love to his son, he bought him a cheap bag and hesi tantly gave it. Chengcai refused to accept it especially when his father failed to explain the bag’s worth and value for giving it to him. Apart from their parents, Tom and Chengcai have also problems with their teacher, Mr. Fu, who often regard them as â€Å"rotten apples. He teaches them Chinese and even bought dictionaries for them to understand his lesson aside from giving remedial classes. But he doesn’t really connect with his students through his teaching strategies and frequently focus or attack his students’ flaws and weaknesses. During a spot check of cellular phones, Tom was caught possessing a pornographic VCD. As Mr. Fu tried to confiscate it, the students passed it on each other until he was able to get it. Chengcai made an impertinent remark which provoked his teacher to hurt him and eventually leads to an exchange that intensified physical fight.Consequently, their parents were called. They begged to the principal to forgive their children and e ven tried to bribe her with various offers. But the principal remained firm as what she believes, â€Å"Rules are rules! I have to go according to the law! † And so, Chengcai was expelled, while Tom received a public caning. After few days, video of the incident was uploaded and watched in the internet which then began to appear in the newspapers and television. The public caning and teacher’s violent action towards the students was questioned.The principal stood by the school rules, policies and corporal punishments which she believes and emphasized that caning is not just about pain, but the shame that the students will feel and will then made them afraid of doing it again. After the incident that led to various school controversies, Mr. Fu submitted a resignation letter which then refused by the principal and faculty to accept. Conversely, Tom and Chengcai got recruited by a street gang. Mr. Lim again talked to the principal to plea for his son but the latter remain ed firm in her decision. Thus, with the help of his friend, Mr.Lim tried to look for other schools in the country but none of them agreed to accept his son. On the other side, Mr. Yeo set a dinner with Tom to spend time with him and tried to somehow make a connection through uttering his son’s generation lingo and giving him a 3G phone. But just the same, he didn’t also win his son’s heart and respect. As part of their initiation, Tom and Chengcai were forced to steal by their senior gang members. However, they were caught by conmen who pretended to be police detectives and demanded them to pay $2000 within their given days or be arrested and jailed.Jerry on the other hand, stole a big amount of money which then found out by his parents. Mr. Yeo enraged and caned him but got embarrassed when Jerry told him the reason behind his action. He explained that he tried to save money and resorted to stealing just to earn $500 to buy an hour of his father’s time s o they will be able to attend in his school presentation. This made Mr. and Mrs. Yeo depressed and blamed their selves because of what their children has gone through as a result of their failures and shortcomings as parents.Moreover, this also brought them to reading Tom’s blogs which he uses as his outlet to vent all his hurts, frustrations and disappointments set off by his parents and teacher who always misunderstands and misjudges him. One of his blogs contains, â€Å"My mom? She oppresses me. Everything I do is never enough for her. When I was in secondary one, I took a wrong bus and got lost. I was terrified. I called Dad from a public phone. He said he was too busy to talk. It’s scary to be lost. I got home after night fall. Mom lashed at me without asking. Slowly, I came to realize that my house is just a place where I sleep.This family seems to have it all. Actually, it feels so empty. † Through these, Mr. & Mrs. Yeo came to realize how unappreciated a nd emptied their children feel as well as their deep disappointments about them. Incapable of raising the money asked from them by the conmen and being scared of being jailed, Tom and Chengcai opted to rob an old woman of her necklace. But as they ran off, they slowly realized that what they did was wrong. Being remorseful by their action, they decided to return the necklace. After learning about what they did, the people around attacked and chased them.Tom bumped into several bystanders and dropped his cell phone. Mr. Yeo was accidentally dialed and made him saw what was happening to his son. He then left his work presentation and went to the scene together with his family. He pleads the old woman to forgive his son and explained their realizations about how he came up with it as a result of their mistakes as parents. Fortunately, the old woman listened and understood what their family was going through and told the police that she just made a prank call. On the other side, Chengca i who was also chased, slammed into gangsters and got beaten up.Mr. Lim, who happens to be on the same area saw him and tried to help and protect his son. Unfortunately, he was accidentally pushed down the stairs and got critically injured. He was then rushed to the hospital, suffering from a serious head trauma. Mr. Lim’s friend told Chengcai about his father’s struggles and efforts just to save money for his studies, look for other school that will let him in and somehow fix their relationship. She than added, â€Å"He’s willing to give up his life for you. Your Dad loved you too much. But, he didn’t know how to show his love. †Being hammered by his conscience and realizing his faults as a son, he decided to go back to school and took the risk of begging the principal to accept him again. On his last agony, Mr. Lim requested to see the school principal. He openly voiced out his failures as a father and how he grew up in a violent environment wher e no one ever cared for him which in the long run caused him being naive on how to show and give love to others. Moreover, he told Chengcai to pursue his talent for fighting and how much he loves him. Sighting this, the principal’s heart melted and allowed Chengcai to return to school and gave him chance to prove his worth.Chengcai developed and enhanced his talent with the school’s support and became an internationally recognized martial artist. Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Yeo finally understood their children and managed to build up their communication and relationship with their children. They joyfully and proudly watched Jerry’s school concert and showed their full support to their talented son. The film ended with Jerry’s narration on how each of them found the key to win everyone’s heart by giving more encouragements and compliments. His last remarks avowed, â€Å"We learned that appreciation is a powerful force.This powerful force may result to the simplest words that you say or an action, or a simple expression. The key point that Jack Neo tries to set forth in this motion picture is the generation gap, communication barriers and the irony in how acts of love and care by children, parents and educators wind up peeving each other.The love manifested by parents to children, children to parents and educators to students are undeniable a nd evidently viewed in the story but often disregarded by the receiving faction. These sentiments are actually true not only to Singapore, where the film was based, but also to the majority of fast paced countries – even in the developing countries similar to the Philippines. Parents’ failure to set off and build good relationship and communication with their children also of giving attention and appreciation is irrefutably the main reason of the problems facing our youths today.The movie clearly depicts how children feel muffled by their environment and often feels pressured by the adults who don’t bother to listen, instead, frequently criticized, judged and labeled them as hopeless and doomed to failure. And with parents who are way too busy to be involved in their children’s lives, but are disgusted if they don’t live up to their expectations, those youths are left with no one else to turn to – especially if they don’t even have or feel the support system from school, particularly their teachers, being their surrogate parents.In our country, being known and true to our values of having close family ties, the school plays a big role in developing our youths. Conflicting and inconsistent beliefs, practices, views, principles, and philosophies that fall under the discourses on educational goals and contents as well as manner of teaching are very apparent in the film. These has been one of the focal points that the movie wants to discuss and give consideration – the underlying problems both in the objective and subjective areas of the educational system.In the film, the lead character’s school is beset with incensed teachers who are extremely dedicated in their work, yet, exceedingly inadequate in imparting knowledge and learning. Jerry’s teacher for instance, she was not able to explain her answer in a proper way when asked by his student about where babies come from. She used other words in stead of the true terminologies in the process of reproduction in explaining. This just added confusion to the child and did not help him in dealing with the situation he was going through.He did not get any clarification to what he’s been curious at or help in solving his problem both in his family and teachers. Mr. Fu, on the other hand, characterized a Chinese teacher who can’t establish connection to his students. He developed this certain barrier between him and his students making it harder for him to establish a good teacher-student relationship. He uses a teacher-centered approach as his way of teaching. Yes, this approach focuses in the student achievements but teachers are driven to meet accountability standards and often sacrifice the ndividual needs of students just to be firm and guarantee that they will be able to meet those standards. More so, this environment only places the control of learning to the hands of the teacher where he makes connections by u sing his expertise in content knowledge. The effort to get to know his students, processing the learning, and identifying their needs are only secondary. Mr. Fu set this atmosphere of a traditional classroom where the student’s interaction is basically just responding to teacher-directed questions and lesson flow.He rarely gives chance to his students for them to construct their own learning. Mr. Fu has high hopes and expectations to his students. So to enhance their Chinese language skills, he bought dictionaries for each of them to be used in his class. But on the contrary, it didn’t serve its purpose because it was also written in Chinese characters, so the students were not able to understand its content. When he was called by the school principal about it, he was advised to somehow translate the Chinese words that he’s teaching and use in English sentences or examples so that the students will able to understand it.Aside from this, he was reminded to think forward and reflect why his students don’t show interest and fail in his subject. Because of not taking his student’s needs into consideration, he was not able to use appropriate materials and teaching strategies. As a result, he was not able to attain his learning objectives and reach his expectations from them. Apart from these, he also failed to teach and inculcate values to his students. As I quoted from his argument with Chengcai, the student told him, â€Å"If we were rotten apples, as our teacher, wouldn’t you be responsible? We often say that teachers should be a role model to his students. Mr. Fu frequently makes violent comments and utterances towards his students which made them hate him and lessen their respect to him. Instead of giving them praises and encouragements so as to develop their confidence and self-esteem, he keeps on criticizing and nagging them, pointing out their flaws and mistakes. Mr. Fu came also to the extent of hurting one of his students when the latter provoked him with harsh comments. He was questioned on as to what degree teachers should do to impose discipline to their students.This brings us to the issue of corporal punishment which was also supported by the school principal in the film. After the incident between Chengcai, Tom and Mr. Fu, she immediately decided to expel one of the students and give public caning as sanction to the other. As I’ve seen, the incident did not go through proper and deep investigation, considering that it involves a serious offense. The student’s sides and rights were not given attention. Then even right after she was able to watch the video containing the incident, she still stood to his decision.She even uttered that corporal punishment, particularly the public caning, does not only involves pain, but also the shame that the students will feel. And because of this, the child and other students will be reminded not to do offenses like those. The school prin cipal depicted a common characteristic of officials who relies on the typical phrase, â€Å"according to the law,† to avoid responsibility, thorough analyzation of the situations or problems at hand and giving of common sense solutions. Furthermore, the school principal was also questioned of not speaking in Chinese, while Mr.Fu was pushing his students to become excellent in that language. The film somehow wants to imply the importance of learning and using their own language. At least, the principal managed to explain why she has poor skills in speaking Chinese and that she’s willing to learn and improve. Aside from these, I also observed that the teachers don’t communicate with the parents in various matters about the student. For instance, Jerry’s teacher did not make it a pint to at least help the child in reminding and encouraging the student to make his parents attend the concert.Knowing that she always reminds Jerry about the concert tickers for h is parents, she should have thought that there’s a problem and she could make a way to communicate them, explain the importance of the performance to their child and encourage them to come. On the other side, Mr. Fu was not also able to communicate especially to those students who he observed to have difficulties and failing in his class. In teacher-centered approach, the role of the teacher is to dispense knowledge and student’s role is to listen and memorize. While in student-centered or constructivist approach, the children are more in control of their learning. Is a teacher simply the dispenser of information or a facilitator of learning? Both approaches works best if we will blend it together. With these, teachers can promote higher order thinking skills and develop students holistically.If teachers will apply both of these methods, they will be able to achieve their learning objectives with the help of providing proper teaching strategies, techniques and materials. Moreover, teacher-student communication should also be developed because it will lead to good learning relationship and improvement.
